Another Week, Another ‘Gone Too Far’ Accusation

Sometimes we need a challenge to our ideologies to ensure we reach those out with our echo-chambers.

A few weeks ago, some papers reported on the Trans guidance introduced by Oxfam International. It seemed to suggest us inclusive folks had Gone Too Far, again.

Here are a couple of thoughts from me:
- We need to understand context for why the words 'mother' and 'father' are banned. I can only imagine it is for use in parental leave policies to discourage gender stereotypes, e.g. 'primary care giver is entitled to xyz'. This recognises the diversity of family make-ups, along with challenging unhelpful gender norms.
- To share inclusive language guidance, along with any other organisational change, it is quite standard to include, 'What push-back do we expect?'. This acknowledges that inclusion can be challenging for some people and we need to adapt for audiences to make cultural change.

I get this stuff can be tricky, and critically analysing news uses mental energy. But please keep curious. Our diverse and inclusive cultures deserve it.
