Books, Boswell, Biographies and Being There In Person.

I don’t know why, but I don’t usually read biographies.

It’s so weird. I love non-fiction and listening to people’s stories so one would assume I’d be an avid biography-devourer.

Alas, not so.

The perfect opportunity arose, however, to get stuck into the genre as I saw there was a whole book festival dedicated to the genre – Bothwell Book Festival. Fantastic. And, even better for me as I had plans to paint my hall that weekend, I could listen online.

I have a lot of respect for tech people who are willing to email me late on Friday night as I frantically try to purchase a ticket. Boswell Book Festival, you were prepared for my last minute purchases.

And I’m so glad it was able to oblige. I tuned in to a variety of folks – from Gogglebox to politics – which led to interesting listening, and playbacks for all those I missed. Speakers included fashion guru Esme Young, hairdresser Sam Mc’Knight, the awesome Val McDermid and the owners of the biggest second hand bookshop in Scotland.

I do love the convenience of remote festivals. Often it’s more accessible too – no need for journeys, but also you can move around, keep appointments, and save money.

That said, when Andrew Cotter (famous for sports commentary and his dog videos in lockdown) commentated for the microphone roving through the audience, I did miss being a part of the jovial crowd. Maybe next year I’ll have to see it for myself in real time…
