Psychological Safety Indexing in Tech Workforce
The Issue
The Managing Director of This is Milk, a digital transformation consultancy, contacted Lynn to discuss her team’s performance, cohesion and ability to speak up and give candid feedback. The Team consisted of people at various stages in their careers, of different ages, ethnicities and genders.
Lynn was approached to solve this issue due to the Managing Director’s confidence in Lynn’s trustworthiness, her facilitation expertise and HR knowledge.
Solution and Impact
Lynn held a 1-2-1 with the leader to gain insights into the issue and suggest ideas and solutions. A session was held with the Team about psychological safety in teams and information was shared about the Fearless Organisation Scan and debrief. This was a proposed solution to bring team issues to light and act foster better collaboration
A Fearless Organisation Scan was conducted with the Team which is a tool that measures psychological safety. This is a survey which lets members rate the four areas of psychologically safe team, namely: Willingness to Help; Inclusion & Diversity: Attitude to Risk & Failure; and Open Conversation. Only the facilitator can see participant results. This report was analysed, and results were compared against global benchmarks. Lynn was able to draw conclusions about issues that were highlighted and conduct confidential 1-2-1’s for sensitive issues.
A 4-hour debrief was held with the team in which the anonymous results were considered. Lynn gave an overview of the results and themes, creating a safe space for the team to discuss issues that had arisen. This was done in a relaxed and boundaried way to encourage honest conversations. At the end of the debrief, a proposed action plan was co-created with the participants in order to take the work forward and see real change occur in ways of working.
The impact on the team can be seen in the following testimonials:
Lynn facilitated an in-person psychological safety session at my workplace, which the entire team attended. As a very small company, team cohesion is crucial to our success. Lynn was an excellent facilitator, making it easier for us to have some tough conversations about our workplace. Her approach created a comfortable and open environment, allowing us to address important issues and improve our team dynamics. We all left the session feeling more connected and understood, which will undoubtedly benefit our collaboration moving forward. Highly recommend Lynn for any team looking to enhance their psychological safety and communication.
